The role of quality assurance in aerospace manufacture is becoming increasingly important. 
These inspections require the use of borescopes to allow engineers to properly and thoroughly assess areas, a system which is fast becoming the standard for visually testing:

If, during an inspection, maintenance personnel can find evidence that the equipment is approaching the end of its life, then it may be possible to delay the failure, prevent it from happening, or replace the equipment at the earliest convenience, rather than allowing the failure to occur with severe consequences.
